Quotes

" If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea."
-- Antoine de St. Exupery

"A teacher affects eternity. No one can tell where his influence stops."
-- Henry Adams

"They know enough who know how to learn." -- Henry Adams

"Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit."
-- Aristotle

" It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them."
-- Leo Buscaglia

"We don't learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience"
-- John Dewey

"I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn."
-- Albert Einstein

"Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood."
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Education is not something which the teacher does... it is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being."
-- Maria Montessori

"Teaching, like any truly human activity, emerges from one's inwardness, for better or worse. As I teach I project the condition of my soul onto my students, my subject, and our way of being together. The entanglements I experience in the classroom are often no more or less than the convolutions of my inner life. Viewed from this angle, teaching holds a mirror to the soul. If I am willing to look in that mirror and not run from what I see, I have a chance to gain self-knowledge--and knowing myself is as crucial to good teaching as knowing my students and my subject"
Parker Palmer from The Courage to Teach, Jossey- Bass 1998

A Message From Kathy

President's Letter

You are cordially invited to join us for the Tenth Annual Educators' Training which will be held from July 17-20, 2008 at Peace Village Learning & Retreat Center in Haines Falls, New York. For those who wish to conduct Living Values Educational Program training for teachers, parents or others, a Train-the-Trainer program will be held from July 17-22, 2008.

As an educator and/or parent you know how important it is to foster a positive, nurturing school climate where children feel safe and are ready to learn! The Living Values Educational Program offers a practical methodology and resources to foster the academic, social and emotional skills of even the most resistant students.

This is a weekend with a purpose, but also one that will include a generous allotment of time for you to enjoy rest, renewal, and retreat. You will be nourished with plenty of delicious vegetarian food and good company in the lush beauty of the Catskill Mountains in mid-summer!

Program Content: This training in the Living Values Education approach will introduce age-appropriate values-based (character education) curricula for preschool, primary school, and secondary school groups. The Living Values series includes: Living Values Activities for Children 3-7; Living Values Activities for Children 8- 14; Living Values Activities for Young Adults; LVEP Educator Training Guide; and Living Values Parent Groups: A Facilitator Guide. The Living Values series of five books won the 2002 Teachers' Choice Award, the only national award program judged by teachers in the classroom.

Program Costs: Participants are asked to contribute $100 per day for room and board as well as a $75 materials fee. All our facilitators are volunteers who dedicate a portion of their summer to share their expertise.

Location: Our host for this training is Peace Village Learning and Retreat Center. It is the generous contributions of others who have benefited from these facilities that make it possible for them to continue offering their facilities to us. Please take a moment to look at their beautiful retreat site at http://www.peacevillage.com and register at: www.livingvalueseducation.org

Please tell your friends and colleagues about the LVEP Educator Training and have them join you at Peace Village.

We hope to see you in July!

Sincerely,

Kathleen A. Shea, Ph.D.
President of LVEP, US

Living Values Education Program Offers Professional Development

Since 1997 hundreds of teachers have learned to integrate Living Values Education Program in their classrooms. Teachers report increased academic performance, as well as greater degrees of caring, understanding and compassion among students. Fewer discipline problems are also reported. We offer workshops throughout the year for teachers and administrators interested in learning about the Living Values Educational Program. We can also provide these and other services on-site in your school or district. Professional development points or CEU's can be obtained for this training in certain states and school districts. In states where LVEP is not an approved professional development provider, we are happy to work with you to explore the possibility for obtaining the proper approvals.

School Wide Implementation-Once a number of teachers in a school or district are implementing the Living Values Education Program approach, there is often a desire to incorporate LVEP principles, tools, strategies, and structures school wide. We offer a range of services to help do this.

School Wide Consultation- we work with your school, base our offerings on your specific needs, and support school leaders who are engaged in implementing LVEP strategies.

Open Worskshop for Representatives of Schools-Our annual summer workshop is open to all school professionals to come as teams to learn about the program, determine applications for their specific school and to create a plan for implementation. What Teachers and Parents Say
What Teachers and Parents Say about Living Values Educational Program

"My students kept a peace log. They made a daily affirmation and wrote about things that they could do to make positive changes at school, at home and in the community, etc. I rewarded them periodically for writing and sometimes sharing what they wrote (always optional to share). This truly was one of the best teaching years that I have experienced! I look forward to doing even more with Living Values for the coming school year!" (Elementary Teacher)

"This year I implemented Living Values curriculum in my class. It was timely, a wonderful and rewarding experience for all of us. My students and I created a peaceful classroom. We created an atmosphere of love and respect for each other, we learned how to be active listeners and at least listen to the other person's point of view, even if we disagreed with them. We were able to create a real win-win attitude to resolve problems." (Middle School Teacher - Civics/Reading)

"When you become a parent, your child doesn't come with a manual. The monthly parenting workshops and the weekly meetings are a unique opportunity to create that handbook. The meetings are powerful, dynamic, energetic, fun and with loads of information that makes sense and that you can apply right away! These meetings have changed my relationship with my 2 children. I will be forever grateful." (Parent)
